fa che la campionessa Sarafina (Refuse To Bend), ritirata dalle competizioni subito dopo la brutta prestazione fornita in America, è stata venduta dall’Aga Khan in Giappone, per andare a rinfoltire la “broodmare band” di Teruya Yoshida alla Shadai

Farm. L’acquisto, formalizzato privatamente, prevede una somma di circa £5 milioni, una offerta che l’Aga Khan… “could not turn down”. La trattativa è stata condotta attraverso la mediazione di Eugenio Colombo, agente italiano di base in Florida, che qualche tempo fa ha venduto allo stesso compratore Elusive Kate (Elusive Quality), vincitrice del Prix Marcel Boussac. Ma allo stesso Eugenio Colombo sono legate molte trattative di successo in connection con Yoshida. Basti pensare a Tony Bin (Kampala), acquistato dopo l’Arco e stallone di successo in Giappone, ma poi

ricordiamo lo stesso Falbrav (Fairy King) e White Muzzle (Dancing Brave).

Elusive Kate, Lily of the Valley, sans compter Danedream, en co-propriété), Teruya Yoshida se manifeste de nouveau spectaculairement : il est bel est bien identifié comme

l’acheteur de la championne de S.A. Aga Khan Sarafina,

par l’intermédiaire du courtier italien installé aux USA Eugenio Columbo, fréquent intervenant pour les besoins de l’élevage Yoshida (cf. les étalons Tony Bin et White Muzzle).

Triple gagnante de groupe I (Saint-Alary, Diane, Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, estimée par beaucoup comme “gagnante morale” de l’Arc 2010 de Workforce – qui l’aura précédé à Shadaï Farm), la fille de Refuse To Bend est inscrite sur la liste 2012 des poulinières de Deep Impact,

l’éminent résident de Shadaï Farm.

Le montant de la transaction n’est pas mentionné. Il s’inscrit nécessairement à un niveau hors norme, de nature à dissuader toute réticence, pour autant qu’il crédite le vendeur de l’équivalent de plusieurs victoires d’Arc, comme il n’est pas interdit de le penser… (cf. l’enchère de 8,5 millions de dollars pour la 3 ans gagnante de Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic Royal Delta aux dernières Keeneland November Sales). La jumenterie de S.A. Aga Khan conserve plusieurs poulinières de la même ascendance maternelle que l’électrique Sarafina, qui n’a manifestement pas exprimé sa valeur dans ses deux dernières courses, l’Arc (dont elle était favorite) et le Breeders’ Cup Turf.

STAR racemare Sarafina is set for a dazzling mating with Deep Impact following her private purchase by Teruya Yoshida’s Shadai Farm.

The sale was revealed in the Racing Post

newspaper when Pat Downes, the Aga Khan’s stud manager in Ireland, said the owner/breeder had “received an offer he could not turn down”.

One leading agent, unconnected with the deal,

speculated yesterday that Sarafina would be valued in the region of £5 million, although neither side involved in the deal would comment on the purchase price.

The sale of the triple Group 1 winner was handled on behalf of the Yoshida family by Florida-based agent Eugenio Colombo, who acted for the same buyers when buying Prix Marcel Boussac winner Elusive Kate shortly before a scheduled appearance at Fasig-Tipton last November.

Colombo has a long-established alliance with the Yoshidas, stretching back to the purchase of Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Tony Bin, subsequently a leading sire in Japan. Other buys include Falbrav and White Muzzle.

The exodus of Sarafina only emphasises just how sought after European mares are in a rejuvenated Japanese bloodstock

economy. There has also been a renewed demand for stallions with last year’s King George winner Harbinger and Derby winner Workforce also secured by the Yoshidas.

The news that Sarafina is in line to be mated with Deep Impact willattract the interest of racefans around the world. A sensational racehorse himself – he won seven Grade 1 events in Japan and finished third

in the 2006 Arc, disqualified from second – his progeny have been in intense demand since he retired to stud, especially as he is a son of the influential Sunday Silence. One of his yearlings sold last year for over £3 million. Deep Impact’s first crop included the winners of the Group 1 Yasuda Kinen and Japanese 1,000 Guineas.
