ELUSIVE KATE Sets Deauville Alight

After the four consecutive successes of GOLDIKOVA (Anabaa) in the Prix Rothschild (Gr1), Deauville was on the search for a new star and it came in the shape of ELUSIVE KATE (Elusive Quality), the pillar to post winner of this Gr1. At three years of age this is already her third victory at Deauville, after winning the Prix du Calvados-Haras des Capucines (Gr3) and the Prix Six Perfections (L) as a two-year-old, and her fourth on French soil after winning the Prix Marcel Boussac last year.
In the absence of a race leader, William Buick took the
initiative to go off in front and the only English runner in the race set up a proper trap for the French horses. The favourite GOLDEN LILAC (Galileo) couldn’t catch the winner when she accelerated and had to be content with second place ahead of MASHOORA (Barathea).
John Gosden was not present at Deauville, but winning jockey William Buick commented: “She was already very good as a two-year-old and her only disappointing run was in the Breeders’ Cup. She wasn’t at her best when second in the Falmouth Stakes last time out [when ridden by Frankie Dettori] but she is tough and she impressed me today.”
